Forest Acres incorporated as a city in 1935 during FDR's Presidency. At the time, the Public Works Administration (WPA) offered grants to incorporated cities to pay for municipal water lines. Rather than become part of the City of Columbia, a group of passionate citizens pushed to become an independent community: one with its own water supply, and developed the area as a suburban oasis for businessmen working downtown.

It is generally bounded or transversed by Beltline, Two Notch and Trenholm Roads, and of course, Forest Drive.

Home styles vary dramatically and include homes constructed in the 1940s as well as new homes under construction today. There is no single style of home that is prevalent as you can find stately manors near Forest Lake Country Club, executive homes in Gregg Park, stylish bungalows on tree lined streets off Devereaux and Kilborne, just to name a few.

Shopping is legendary on Forest Drive which includes a number of boutiques as well as national chains. Trehnolm Plaza has been a shopping mecca for decades and a new development on the old Cardinal Newman site is under way.
